The astronauts sent home the first human pictures of what would come to be called 'Blue Marble', shimmering in space, full of potential and riven with war and conflict. It was a Nuclear era, Nuclear weapons bristled and two nations threatened to end life as we know it.

Our new vantage point, looking back from Earth's moon, shook humanity's understanding of ourselves and our place as stewards of life on Earth... We realized it was our time to go beyond the peace movement. Soon we began talking and planning for the first Earth Day. The modern environmental movement had work to do and we set ourselves to the task at hand. Earth in human hands...
