Carbon Free Boston: Report

The Carbon Free Boston report, undertaken at the request of Mayor Martin J. Walsh, identifies the specific and measurable steps the City of Boston must take to meet its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050. The report found that to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, Boston must pursue three mutually-reinforcing strategies in key sectors: 1) deepen energy efficiency while reducing demand, 2) electrify as much possible, and 3) purchase 100 percent clean energy.

Carbon Free Boston will inform the City of Boston’s Climate Action Plan update, which will focus on high-priority next steps to reduce carbon pollution and create a healthy, thriving and resilient Boston.

Boston’s Commitment: Achieve Net Zero Carbon Energy Sources by 2050

Boston is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent (over 2005) by 2020 and achieving net zero carbon energy sources by 2050, even as the city grows. City leaders have also pledged to prepare, in numerous ways, for the effects of climate change.

The Green Ribbon Commission provides a place where the climate conversation can take place – to develop and debate new ideas, policies, and projects – between the City of Boston and its private sector leaders.

A Structured Network

Green Ribbon and City leaders believe that by aligning the work of many sectors, Boston can create a greener, healthier and more prosperous city, inspiring other communities across the country and the world.
