I am fortunate to be one of a few who watched earth science 'big science' missions of NASA come into existence w the efforts of Congressman George E. Brown, who was instrumental in creating, shepherding, and protecting earth- and atmospheric-science programs as they began. He knew, and I heard his reasoning, that we needed good data, facts, science to guide our policy decisions. NASA and a range of educational/university programs stepped up and created the first-generation beginning that we now have as data banks/baselines/earth system changes that are being measured and monitored in ways to guide political policy makers on climate, resources, protecting our life enabling 'thin blue layer' (www.thinbluelayer.com). Rep. George E. >Three years ago we introduced a cloud-free mosaic of the world in Google Earth. Today we’re rolling out an even more beautiful and seamless version, with fresh imagery from '''Landsat 8''' satellite and new processing techniques for sharper images than ever before. Satellite images are often cloudy, but not always over the same place, so we looked at millions of images and took the clearest pixels to stitch together this cloud-free and seamless image.

''The images in 'A Beautiful Planet' are so incredible that its narration can feel like an afterthought. But this IMAX Entertainment production, made in cooperation with NASA, presents an impassioned and very persuasive message for advancing beyond fossil fuels.

''Shot over two years and covering three space-station expeditions, A Beautiful Planet captures Earth in scenes of indescribable grandeur. A typhoon 300 miles wide fills the IMAX frame. Lightning dots a nighttime sky while aurora borealis glows on the horizon. The Caribbean positively shines under a full moon.

''Director Toni Myers begins the movie by zooming into and through the Milky Way, singling out our sun, an ordinary star among millions. The enormity of the universe emphasizes how precarious our place on Earth is, how unusual the circumstances are to harbor life.

''Close to two-thirds of the planet's surface is covered with water.

''The blues and greens of oceans and lakes shimmer under the lenses of the astronauts' cameras (digital, a first for an IMAX space movie)...

''Astronauts like Samantha Cristoforetti from Italy show viewers what it's like to live on a space station for months at a time. Drinking espresso, cutting hair, taking a "shower" become complicated procedures. Even celebrating Christmas takes ingenuity.

''A shrinking glacier in Greenland in time-lapse photography... deforestation in Madagascar... Plumes of smoke extend for miles across empty fields that used to be rainforest in Brazil.

Zimbabwe (Harare) (AF) https://www.google.com/maps/@-17.9243527,25.8558941,1009m/data=!3m1!1e3 (Victoria Falls)
''The movie accepts climate change as a given, and insists that we move from fossil fuels to renewable

''Astronaut Cristoforetti suggests that we think of ourselves as crew members on a space ship instead of passengers, so that we can accept responsibility for protecting the planet. It's a message that should resonate with viewers of all ages.

''A Beautiful Planet is more than just pretty pictures. Thoughtful and encouraging, it could change how viewers think about climate change.

Google Maps introduces #Earth360 imagery

June 27, 2016

>Three years ago we introduced a cloud-free mosaic of the world in Google Earth. Today we’re rolling out an even more beautiful and seamless version, with fresh imagery from Landsat 8 satellite and new processing techniques for sharper images than ever before. Satellite images are often cloudy, but not always over the same place, so we looked at millions of images and took the clearest pixels to stitch together this cloud-free and seamless image.

June 2013

>This new imagery of the earth from space virtually eliminates clouds, includes refreshed imagery for regions of the world where high-resolution imagery is not yet available, and offers a more comprehensive and accurate view of the texture of our planet's landscape.

The images in 'A Beautiful Planet' are so incredible that its narration can feel like an afterthought. But this IMAX Entertainment production, made in cooperation with NASA, presents an impassioned and very persuasive message for advancing beyond fossil fuels.

Shot over two years and covering three space-station expeditions, A Beautiful Planet captures Earth in scenes of indescribable grandeur. A typhoon 300 miles wide fills the IMAX frame. Lightning dots a nighttime sky while aurora borealis glows on the horizon. The Caribbean positively shines under a full moon.

Director Toni Myers begins the movie by zooming into and through the Milky Way, singling out our sun, an ordinary star among millions. The enormity of the universe emphasizes how precarious our place on Earth is, how unusual the circumstances are to harbor life.

Close to two-thirds of the planet's surface is covered with water.

The blues and greens of oceans and lakes shimmer under the lenses of the astronauts' cameras (digital, a first for an IMAX space movie)...

Astronauts like Samantha Cristoforetti from Italy show viewers what it's like to live on a space station for months at a time. Drinking espresso, cutting hair, taking a "shower" become complicated procedures. Even celebrating Christmas takes ingenuity.

A shrinking glacier in Greenland in time-lapse photography... deforestation in Madagascar... Plumes of smoke extend for miles across empty fields that used to be rainforest in Brazil.

The movie accepts climate change as a given, and insists that we move from fossil fuels to renewable

Astronaut Cristoforetti suggests that we think of ourselves as crew members on a space ship instead of passengers, so that we can accept responsibility for protecting the planet. It's a message that should resonate with viewers of all ages.

A Beautiful Planet is more than just pretty pictures. Thoughtful and encouraging, it could change how viewers think about climate change.
