During this morning’s session of the council meeting, the Las Vegas City Council approved a resolution in support of the Mayors for Peace 2020 Vision Campaign and a similar resolution from the U.S. Conference of Mayors calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons by the year 2020.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman, a member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, requested to have the city lend its support to both initiatives, which call for the elimination of nuclear weapons by the year 2020. The resolutions signify the mayor’s support on behalf of the city.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors for Peace has launched an international campaign calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons, known as the 2020 Vision Plan. The U.S. Conference of Mayors has adopted several resolutions over the years in support of related efforts, including a 2004 resolution supporting the commencement of negotiations on the elimination of nuclear weapons. In approving the resolution today, the Las Vegas City Council, along with the city of Las Vegas, joins numerous other cities across the nation and throughout the world in voicing its support of this goal.

“As long as nuclear weapons exist, cities around the world will be vulnerable to instantaneous devastation,” Mayor Goodman said. “It is important that the city of Las Vegas joins mayors across the country in calling for the elimination of nuclear weapons.”
