'''Type''': Resolution '''Status''': Adopted on 6/6/08 '''Vote''': Unanimous (1 absence) '''Source File''': http://www.mauicounty.gov/documents/County%20Clerks/Resolutions/2008/Reso%2008-046.PDF '''Text''': '''Resolution No. 08-46'''<br> ''URGING THE COUNTY OF MAUI TO BECOME ONE OF THE BEST WORKPLACES FOR COMMUTERS'' '''WHEREAS''', gasoline prices in Maui County are among the highest in the nation, rose about 20 percent during a recent 12-month period, and rose nearly 10 percent during May 2008; and '''WHEREAS''', as Maui County's population has grown in recent years, traffic congestion has worsened; and '''WHEREAS''', traffic fatalities in Maui County increased by 67 percent from 1994 to 2006; and '''WHEREAS''', standard motor vehicles emit carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change, which places Maui County's natural environment at risk; and '''WHEREAS''', individual choices in transportation may result in significant improvement in the overall quality of life, may reduce commute times, and may improve roadway safety; and '''WHEREAS''', many municipalities and private employers have been recognized by the National Center for Transit Research as being the Best Workplaces for Commuters; and '''WHEREAS''', to become one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters, an organization must provide employee benefits that encourage commuting by carpool, transit, bicycle, or walking, and decrease the need for commuting by the implementation of telecommuting or four-day work weeks, or provide other employee benefits that save transportation costs, improve traffic safety, and reduce air pollution; and '''WHEREAS''', the Best Workplaces for Commuters application and other information are available at the following website: http://www.bestworkplaces.org/; and '''WHEREAS''', by helping to save transportation costs, improve traffic safety, and reduce air pollution, the government of the County of Maui could serve as a good example for other employers in Hawaii; now, therefore, '''BE IT RESOLVED''' by the Council of the County of Maui: 1. That it hereby urges the County of Maui to become one of the Best Workplaces for Commuters, as recognized by the National Center for Transit Research; and 2. That certified copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Mayor; the Director of Transportation; the Director of Public Works; the Planning Director; the Director of Personnel Services; the Chief of Police; the Director of Finance; the Director of Housing and Human Concerns; the Traffic Safety Council; the Cost of Government Commission; Alton Watanabe, Maui Division Chief, Hawaii Government Employees Association; Dayton M. Nakanelua, State Director, United Public Workers; Irene Bowie, Executive Director, Maui Tomorrow; Lance Holter, Chair, Maui Group, Sierra Club of Hawaii; and Joel Volinski, Director, National Center for Transit Research.
