The College
Macalester College is a privately supported coeducational liberal arts college. It was founded in 1874 as a Presbyterian-related but non-sectarian college; its first class entered Sept. 15, 1885.

Macalester provides an undergraduate education of uncompromising quality, characterized by four historic values:

  • Macalester science faculty have received $7 million in research and equipment grants from the National Science Foundation since 1996.

Special Programs

  • Study abroad: More than half of Macalester students study abroad for a semester or more (in more than 65 countries in the past five years).
  • Internship program: Over 250 students receive academic credit for supervised internships with local, national and international businesses and organizations each year.
  • Civic Engagement: Each semester, more than half of students engage in local community work through a community-based course, applied research, off-campus work-study, community service or a civic leadership program. Over 90% are active in our urban community before graduating.

Facilities

  • Campus location: 53 acres in a historic residential neighborhood in Saint Paul, and the 280-acre Katharine Ordway Natural History Study Area on the Mississippi River 16 miles from campus.
  • Campus buildings: Over 1.2 million square feet including seven academic buildings, library, technology center, health care facility, campus center, 10 residence halls and more.
  • All residence halls have received major renovation and have fire sprinkler systems.
  • There are five language residences (French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish) and EcoHouse, Veggie Co-op theme residences
  • The new 175,000 square foot, $45 million Leonard Center is expected to open in fall 2008 and will house facilities for fitness and wellness programs and state-of-the-art training and competition areas.
  • $18.5 million Ruth Stricker Dayton Campus Center features a lecture and performance auditorium and food pavilions featuring salad bar, grill, noodles and wraps, chilies & tortillas, curries & sambals, and comfort food.
  • Olin-Rice Science Center provides generous laboratory space for classes and student-faculty research; the open design facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • DeWitt Wallace Library houses 450,000 volumes and subscribes to 1,350 print journals and 1,350 electronic journals. The library provides access to over 16,000 electronic journals and 40,000 e-books and 10,000 audiovisual materials including film and music. Students have access to 1.5 million volumes at seven nearby colleges and materials at virtually any library in the world through our online services.

Intercollegiate Sports
