Description:

Clarence City Council has endorsed a greenhouse gas emissions target of 20% below 2003 levels by 2015.

Council is a participant in the Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) program, which assists local governments to set greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and identify ways to achieve these targets.

The program is based on a performance framework beginning with an inventory and forecast for Community and Corporate (Council) greenhouse gas emissions. Inventory results have enabled Council to establish its Corporate emissions reduction goal.

The results are presented as tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) and quantified Clarence's corporate base year emissions as - 2,144t CO2-e and Community base year emissions - 307,165t CO2-e.

The Mayor of Clarence, Alderman Jock Campbell said Council will undertake a community consultation and engagement process in 2009 to develop Community emission reduction targets.

"Possible abatement strategies appropriate to reduce Council's Corporate and Community emissions include a reduction in energy consumption and organic waste creation, better energy efficiency and the use of alternative energy sources," Alderman Campbell said.

"A combination of these strategies could result in a Corporate reduction of up to 2,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per calendar year."

In Australia, the CCP program is delivered by ICLEI Oceania as part of an international program, in collaboration with the Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts.

The CCP Program assists councils in formulating policies, identifying avenues for funding and implementing quantifiable measures to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and enhance urban liveability and sustainability.
