Earth's ocean contains about 1.35 billion cubic kilometers (324 million cubic miles) of water, which is about 97 percent of all the water on Earth.

β€œThe health of the ocean and humankind are so deeply intertwined that we ignore the connection at our peril." -- UN Climate Change's first mandated Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue - a yearly stepping stone to greater ambition for ocean-climate action (2022)

On the front line of climate change, the ocean, coastlines and coastal communities are being disproportionately impacted by increasing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions from human activities. To tackle this, governments at COP26 in Glasgow set in place an annual dialogue to strengthen ocean and climate change action.

The first Ocean and Climate Change Dialogue took place during the June 2022 Bonn Climate Change Conference.
