Description:

Mars Area School District participates in a paper recycling program offered by Abitabi Consolidated in Carnegie, Pa.

Abitabi's yellow and green "Paper Retriever" recycling bins are located at each of the District's five school buildings. The District's schools and the community can then use the bins to recycle newspapers, magazines, catalogs, junk mail, envelopes, folders, fax/copy paper and colored paper. No phone books or cardboard as well as any plastic, glass, metal and trash will be accepted.

The company provides the District with a monthly statement and payment based on the tonnage of recyclable materials collected. The funding is then used to make other "green" improvements at the District's school buildings, as per the recommendations of recycling coordinators from each school building.

The District also placed smaller paper recycling bins throughout each school for the collection of recyclable items. Abitabi's free, community-based program supplements, existing recycling programs at Mars Area Centennial School and Mars Area Middle School.

Mars Area Middle School
During each school year, Mars Area Middle School's student-led Environmental Committee collects old telephone books, aluminum soda cans and tabs, ink cartridges, newspapers and office paper, as part of the school's annual Recycling Campaign.

Tabs from the soda cans are donated to Ronald McDonald House, which provides families, who have a child staying in a local hospital, with a place to stay as well as other services. The aluminum cans and printer cartridges are recycled and the proceeds are used to maintain a small garden at the front entrance to the school. The phone books are donated to North Pittsburgh Telephone Company's phone book recycling program, which recycles phone books into ceiling tiles.

Donations may be dropped of during school hours.

Mars Area Centennial School
Mars Area Centennial School recycles paper including office paper, construction paper, magazines, catalogues, junk mail, greeting cards, wrapping paper, newspapers and paper bags. Cardboard and phone books will not be accepted.

Donations may be dropped of during school hours.
