Description:

Food scraps and food -soiled paper products make up the largest percentage of our garbage in Fremont. In fact, about 20% of what we throw away is food waste, and it does not need to go to a landfill. We need to find alternate ways to reduce waste and recycle more. By participating in the food scrap recycling program, your food scraps become compost, a valuable resource, not a waste.

Why should I recycle food scraps?

  • Reduce the amount of garbage going to a landfill.
  • Food scraps are made into compost and given out to residents free at the annual Compost Giveaway event.
  • Cuts down on wear and tear on your garbage disposal.
  • Reduces landfill emissions that contribute to climate change.

How do I recycle food scraps?

  • Line your kitchen pail with a paper bag, newspaper, or compostable liner to help keep it clean.
  • Scrape your dinner plate into your lined kitchen pail, not the garbage.
  • Empty the kitchen pail, including liner, into your green cart.

Please put in following items in the green cart:

All Food Scraps

  • Fruit, vegetables, and peelings
  • Coffee grounds, filters, and tea bags
  • Leftover foods (cooked raw)
  • Meat and bones
  • Bread, pasta, and rice

Food-Soiled Paper

  • Paper towels and napkins
  • Paper plates and cups
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Milk, ice cream, and juice cartons
  • Pizza boxes with or without pizza

More food scraps recycling info:

  • Using the kitchen pail is not required. You can collect your food scraps in paper milk, juice, or ice cream cartons, paper take-our containers, or any other paper container that is convenient for you.
  • Just add the food scraps directly into your green cart.
  • If you are concerned about the mess or possibility of bugs, try lining the kitchen pail and emptying it often to keep the pail neat and clean.
