Description:

What is the Live Green Volunteer Program?
The Live Green Volunteer Program is a local training opportunity for volunteers to work in partnership with the staff of the Sustainability & Environmental Services Department and extend information throughout our community. Live Green Volunteers will pledge to take individual actions toward greener living and help others do the same.

Purpose
Live Green Volunteers are trained partners of the City of Plano’s Sustainability & Environmental Services Department. They assist in the expansion of the City’s environmental education and community outreach by providing other residents with environmental information, and simple tips for greener, cleaner, more sustainable living.

Qualification for Trainees
Live Green Volunteers should have a basic knowledge of, or interest in, environmental issues; enthusiasm for acquiring and sharing green living knowledge and skills; an ability to communicate effectively; and, the time and willingness to participate in educational activities and projects.

To help you decide if you should apply to be a Live Green Volunteer, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I want to learn more about ways to reduce my impact on the environment?
  • Am I eager to participate in a free, practical and intensive training program?
  • Do I look forward to sharing my knowledge with people in the community?
  • Do I have enough time to attend the training and to complete 24 hours of volunteer work?
  • Am I willing to follow through on my volunteer commitment?

If you answered yes to these questions, the Live Green Volunteer Program could be for you.

How do I become a Live Green Volunteer?
Completing the initial training and participating in 24 volunteer service hours makes you a full-fledged Live Green Volunteer. You will have the opportunity to continue to build your knowledge base by attending an environmental class or training every other month.

What subjects will be covered during training?
If accepted into the Live Green Volunteer Program, you will be eligible to attend Live Green Volunteer Training. Classes will be taught by City of Plano staff, local experts, knowledgeable residents and volunteers. The core training will offer approximately 12 hours of instruction covering a variety of topics, including: water quality and conservation, air quality, basic composting, recycling, non-hazardous cleaning supplies, water-conscious and chemical-free yard care, alternative energy sources and conservation techniques.
