Description:

Marshall University
Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender Outreach Office

The Marshall University Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender Outreach works to create, sustain, and strengthen an open, safe, equal, and inclusive campus community for students, faculty, and staff of all sexual orientations and gender identities. This is accomplished by providing counseling referrals, LGBT resources, programming, and safe spaces intended to enrich, empower, educate, and advocate for Marshall's LGBT community; while also recognizing the importance of creating opportunities for allied community members to learn about issues facing the LGBT population in order help foster an open, equal, and inclusive academic climate.

We provide programs for both the classroom and campus environments.

Safe Space and Allies Project
The Safe Space and Allies Project is run out of the LGBT Outreach office. Participants in this project are given a sticker to be placed on their door or in their office area. By placing their sticker faculty and staff members show that they are allies in the LGBT Community. For more information please call or visit our office. We are currently updating the Safe Space program.

Guest Speakers
From time to time the Office brings guest speakers to campus to discuss issues of concern to the LGBT community. These programs are open to the public and are intended to enlighten and inform as well as offer additional views on an issue.

Outreach Presentations
The LGBT Outreach Office offers outreach presentations to University 101 classes, specialized classes, and other campus groups. These Presentations include LGBT related issues including coming out, homophobia, stereotypes, and LGBT life in the United States and Huntington. Our presentations can address specific needs or areas of concern as well.

Coming Out Resources
If you are planning to come out to your friends and/or family, you are invited to stop by our office in the basement of the Memorial Student Center to gather resources that might make the process easier. We also offer referrals to professional counselors through the Marshall University Counseling Center located on the first floor of Prichard Hall.

LGBTO Lending Library
Our library offers a wide variety of books, magazines, and films for your use on a number of topics relating to LGBT community. These topics include HIV/AID, sub-cultural concerns, self help, coming out stories, biographies, poetry, essay collections, and LGBT fiction. Our magazine selection varies from year to year but includes current and back issues of The Advocate, Curve, Girlfriends, A&U, & OUT Magazine.
