Ordinance 2005-1
TO ESTABLISH MAHARISHI VEDIC CITY AS AN ORGANIC CITY

Whereas, pursuant to the Constitution of the State of Iowa and to Chapter 364 of the Code of Iowa, Maharishi Vedic City possesses home rule powers, not inconsistent with the laws of the State of Iowa; and

Whereas, Maharishi Vedic City has taken pride in being an all-organic city and this character of the city has been maintained on a voluntary basis by all the owners of residential, agricultural, and commercial property in the City.

Whereas, organic agriculture, including production, processing and distribution, is a cornerstone of the City’s plans for economic development. Further the organic character of the city is an attraction for tourism and for new residents.

Now, therefore, the City Council of Maharishi Vedic City, adopts the following ordinance:

As a general commercial ordinance of the City, all land in Maharishi Vedic City whether used for residential, commercial or agricultural purposes, shall be maintained in accordance with the standards of the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program and the Iowa Organic Program of the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

This ordinance shall be effective on March 8, 2005.
