In the year One Thousand Nine Hundred and Ninety-four

Resolved by the City Council of the City of Burlington, as follows:

That WHEREAS, sustainability is an economic state in which the demands placed upon the environment by people and commerce can be met without reducing the capacity of the environment to provide for future generations; and

WHEREAS, this City Council unanimously supported the "Common Ground" Enterprise Community Application in which sustainability is one of the three over-arching strategic goals; and

WHEREAS, a sustainable economic plan is one OF the important themes of the recent economic plan put forth by CEDO and unanimously accepted by the Burlington City Council; and

WHEREAS, the people of Burlington on many occasions have expressed their commitment to clean water, air and land, a healthy downtown and good jobs in the community;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that we direct our city departments to strive for a sustainable economy by:

1. Maximizing their conservation efforts

2. Helping to develop and use within the departments renewable resources

3. Fostering local production to meet more of local needs

4. Supporting decision-making at the grassroots level

5. Encouraging low-cost, community self-help strategies that empower people to help themselves.

AND, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT we request CEDO to coordinate a survey of City departments' efforts to achieve these goals thus far and their plans to incorporate economic sustainability in their programs for the future, and to present the results of this survey to this Council no later than March 15, 1995.
