SJS / GreenPolicy Siterunner: The 1992 Brown campaign was the first to employ the new, expanding Internet and the first to raise funds across the country focusing on individual donors and an 800 number that became both ubiquitous on the campaign trail and slighted by those accustomed to big donors comprising the bulk of campaign financing (and political influence).
The Brown campaign was successful in its fundraising, reached out to citizen participation, and challenged the Clinton campaign and its big donor contributors and Democratic party fundraising 'model'.
The fundraising approaches employed by the Brown campaign staff would become, as the Internet grew, new tools in campaign arsenals designed to compete with mainline money-in-politic and vested interests. Modern US campaigns, of necessity, now look to the Internet and social media as a necessity and, as was seen in the Sanders campaign of 2016, the possibility of changing the reliance of candidates and campaigns on big donors is rising as a challenge to business-as-usual.
Btw, as of 2016, Jerry Brown's original 800 number still works -- and callers are re-directed to the Office of the California Governor.
