December 1968. The modern-era of an environmental movement dawned with a view out the window of an Apollo mission to the Earth's moon.
The time was auspicious, Christmas Eve, December 24th. The human astronaut voyagers onboard the Apollo 8 spaceship had long lists of duties that they were attending to, NASA-guided tasks as they circled around the moon surveying for potential safe spots for a future moon landing.
They had no orders to take photos of planet Earth ...
Then serendipity arose. A life-changing moment, an opening to the future began as one of the astronauts chanced to look out of a small spaceship window and, surprisingly, coming into view was a full-color image of our home planet Earth. The next moments were captured on audio tape ...
The magic begins with Astronaut Bill Anders yelling ... 'look'... and the astronauts scramble for a camera and a roll of color film to load. Listen.

Anders: "Oh, my God, look at that picture over there. There's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"
What happens next is in the years before digital cameras.
Anders (to astronaut Jim Lovell): "You got a color film, Jim?! Hand me a roll of color, quick, would you?"
Lovell: "Oh, man, that's great! Where is it?"
Anders: "Hurry. Quick!"
Lovell: "Down here?"
Anders: "Just grab me a color. A color exterior. Hurry up. Got one?"
Lovell: "Yeah, I'm lookin' for one. C368."
Anders: "Anything quick."
Lovell hands him the film just as Anders is saying, "I think we missed it."
Then, within seconds, Lovell sees the shot again in another window of the command module. He asks for the camera from Anders.
Anders: "Wait a minute, just let me get the right setting here now, just calm down. Calm down, Lovell!"
Anders, now ready and focused gets the shot that has been reproduced innumerable times all over the world ...

soon to be shared, forever changing humanity's vision of ourselves, of who we are.
Within a year we were turning 'Earthrise' into 'Earth Day' & On & On to Today
