Memories from the Mid-1980s and the Take Off of the Surfrider Foundation 🏄🏻♂️🏄🏻♂️🏄🏻♂️🏄🏻♂️
Some of my friends might know about my green work in the 70s and 80s and some of my friends probably don't know about my friend Rob, 'Birdlegs' Caughlan and the beginning of the Surfrider Foundation, which now is doing Enviro-action around the world.

We used to 'hang out' at my Palisades home, often in the gazebo looking out at the small point break below next to Gladstones. We'd talk eco- and surfing and Rob talked about what he had planned for a Surfrider Foundation. He was a good long-board surfer and he was a very good legal advocate.
In the 1980s the Surfider Foundation took off, 'paddling and beginning the ride' in Malibu, up the coast from my 17000 Sunset Boulevard home, but it was in Humboldt County in Northern Calif, near Arcata and Crescent City that the surfers really got going. Time to ride big waves and the first lawsuit to protect the coastlines and water, a blue-green model, set in motion decades of environmental action. Rob was a mover-shaker and the sawmill pollution case result was a multi-million dollar settlement and prevention/clean up of the mill's polluting operations. The success became a model for decades of seashore cleanups and ocean shoreline preservation by an expanding group of Surfrider local groups around the US. The Surfrider Foundation's model, with blue-green practices, has since spread around the world to cities and coastal shorelines, multiple cultures and countries. Time to makes waves for sure, ride on surfriders of all kinds ....
