Description:
Come check out the newest addition to Lynchburg’s trail system- DASANI Blue Bikes! If you want to get outside, be active, and explore the trail system by bike, this is an ideal way to start. The Blue Bikes program gives local area residents the free use of 20 adult size new Trek Classic Cruiser bicycles to travel along over 9 miles of paved trails on the Blackwater Creek Bikeway and James River Heritage Trail System. The DASANI Blue Bikes are housed in storage lockers located just past the entrance of the Kemper Station Trail, at 1755 Park Avenue and are available free to residents during daylight hours.

DASANI created the Blue Bikes program in 2005 in partnership with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. Each year DASANI and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy choose several communities across the country to take part in the program. This year the program is supported by Trek© Bicycles. To locate trails in other communities, visit: www.dasani.com.

How to Register
It only takes a few minutes for Lynchburg-area residents to register for a DASANI Blue Bike check-out card. Visitors should go to the customer service desk at the Miller Center, 301 Grove Street, from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Be sure to bring a government-issued photo ID with you. City residents may check out a card for indefinite use and non-city residents can check out a card for five days. When you register you will receive a brochure with detailed information about all aspects of the Blue Bikes program.

Additional Information and Safety Tips
After registering, simply take your card and pick up your bike at the Kemper Station Trail lockers. Insert the card through the reader at the lockers. Remove the bike, close the door, take your card, and off you go! Enjoy your ride, and remember to return the bike to the same locker.

Please remember to follow these simple safety tips:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Check the bike for proper fit, tire pressure and operation
  • Ride on the right, pass on the left
  • Yield to walkers and runners
  • Have fun, and plan your trip so that you return before dark

About the Bikes
Lynchburg has twenty Blue Bikes all adult size; with ten 19-inch and ten 21-inch bicycles. The Bicycles are single-speed cruisers equipped with bells, reflectors and kickstands. Because they are single-speed bicycles please be aware that you might have to walk the bike on some of the steep sections of our trails.

Get out on the trail, enjoy your ride, and remember….trails are great places to share!
