The Boca Raton-based scientist is launching his second book on the topic of climate change and sea-level rise called “Moving to Higher Ground,” which explains the issue and attempts to address the future changes to shorelines in Florida, as well as other parts of the country and the world.

Well before he became an author, an encounter with a worldwide celebrity changed his life direction.

“In 1997, I was on the board of the trade association for the diving industry,” he said. “They had a marine environmental effort, and I was asked to be the chair for the nonprofit. We asked Jacques Cousteau to come to Orlando in January of that year to receive our award. He and I spent three days together. From that encounter, he asked me to become CEO of the Cousteau Society, which was something I couldn’t turn down.”

“One major thing the whole connection gave me was our talks about climate change,” he said. “What he gave me at that point was a bigger view of the world. Jacques had been working on ocean preservation issues for 70 years. Even though he started out as the co-inventor of modern scuba diving equipment, he really became famous for pioneering a way of looking at the world holistically as an ocean planet.”

That encounter produced an awareness of the role of sea-level rise as a major symptom of climate change. And that consciousness led to Englander writing the 2012 book “High Tide on Main Street,” a treatise meant to help the public understand the driving forces behind climate change and its relationship to rising oceans.
