Welcome to the City of Tucson's Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Program website. The Vision for the City of Tucson's Department of Transportation Bicycle and Pedestrian Program is to increase bicycle and walking opportunities among a wide range of users including adults, the elderly and youth, and individuals with special needs. Our vision is to inspire people to get out of their cars and onto the street.
The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program focuses its efforts on activities that will improve the quality of bike-ped facilities, raise awareness about safety issues and laws, help to integrate bicycle and pedestrian planning into all city operations, and makes it easier and more logical to walk, or bike to your destination.
Tucson Bike Map
The Tucson Metro Area Bike Map provides information on existing bike routes, lanes, and shared use paths. Local and state bike laws, safety information and resources are also included.
The Tucson Bike Map was created by the Pima Association of Governments through their coordination with member jurisdictions which includes Arizona Department of Transportation, City of Tucson, Pima County, South Tucson, Town of Oro Valley, Town of Sahuarita, Town of Marana, Pascua Yaqui Tribe and the Tohono O'Odham Nation. Design and Printing provided by Pima County.

Design and Printing provided by Pima County. Tucson Metro Area Bike Maps are also available at your local library, Ward Office, Police Service Stations, Fire Department, the Chamber of Commerce, the Tucson Visitors and Convention Bureau, and local bike shops.
Bikefest 2008
Bike Fest is Tucson’s annual celebration of bicycles and bike transportation. The main purpose is to promote bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation by hosting activities that increase community participation and awareness of bicycling. Bike Fest 2008 runs from March 30th – April 20th. Whether you ride everyday, the weekends, or just always wanted to try, Bike Fest has an event for you. Check out the Bike Fest website for detailed information about the events and to see what bike shops are offering discounts on merchandise.
CityCycle
The City Cycle Bike-Sharing Program offers City of Tucson downtown employees an easy and healthy option for traveling to appointments. Three-speed KHS Manhattan Green bikes, helmets, locks and other safety equipment are available for use at designated check out locations. The bikes can also be used for wellness rides.

Tucson-Pima Bicycle Advisory Committee
The Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee was established to serve in an advisory capacity to local governments on issues relating to bicycle recreation, transportation, and safety. Details can be found on their website here: Tucson-Pima County Bicycle Advisory Committee.
Shared Lane Markings
The Bicycle Advisory Committee in March 2008, recommended the use of shared lane markings as a pilot installation at the Five Points Improvement Project.
The Shared Lane Markings are intended to:
1. Help bicyclists position themselves in lanes too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side by side within the same traffic lane;
2. Encourage safe passing of bicyclists by motorists;
3. Reduce the chance of a bicyclist’s impacting the open door of a parked vehicle in a shared lane with on-street parallel parking;
4. Alert road users of the lateral location bicyclists may occupy; and
5. Reduce the incidence of wrong-way bicycling.
Share The Road
This guide illustrates how bicyclists and motorists can “Share the Road” legally and safely within the Eastern Pima County-Tucson Region. Safety tips are described as well as legal responsibilities of bikers and drivers. A complete listing of regional bicycle laws is included.

2008 Bike 2 Work Day
Bicycle commuters are invited to participate in the annual Bike to Work Day on Friday, April 11, 2008. Celebrate cleaner air, a healthier body, and saved gas from your bike commute. For those in the downtown area, visit the Bike 2 Work Fair from 7 to 9 a.m. in front of the downtown main library. The fair will feature bike education and repair booths, bike registration, commuting information, safety equipment, a raffle for items including a new bike, and a free continental breakfast for those who show their helmet.
If you do not commute to the downtown area but are still interested in participating let us know! We are coordinating with major employers throughout the Tucson Metropolitan Area to encourage them to organize a Bike to Work Day event at their workplace.
The event is part of Clean Air Days, a region-wide, multi-jurisdiction effort to promote alternative modes of transportation.
Free Bike Valet Parking
Tucson Department of Transportation offers free bicycle valet parking at several Tucson special-events. Leave your bicycle in our guarded area, receive commuting information, and get free safety devices. We are scheduled to be at the following events:
- Novemeber 10, 2007: GABA SwapMeet on 4th Avenue
- December 7-9, 2007: 4th Avenue Street Fair (2 locations)
- April 4-6, 2008: 4th Avenue Street Fair (2 locations)
- April 6, 2008: Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Reid Park
- April 11, 2008: Bike 2 Work Day Downtown
- April 19, 2008: Earth Day and Bike to the Zoo at Reid Park (2 locations)
- April 20, 2008: GABA Swap Meet on 4th Avenue
