Resolution 2006-60 Opposing the Confinement of Egg-Laying Hens in Battery Cages

Whereas, animal welfare organizations and the media have illuminated the cruel and inhumane treatment of egg-laying hens caged in battery cages in Maryland and throughout the country; and

Whereas, egg-laying hens confined in battery cages suffer greatly from the resulting disturbance of many of their natural behaviors, including nesting, perching, dustbathing, walking and even spreading their wings; and

Whereas, many countries, including Austria, Germany, and Switzerland have banned the use of battery cages for egg-laying hens; and

Whereas, scores of universities in the United States have enacted policies to eliminate or dramatically reduce their use of eggs from caged hens; and

Whereas, cage-free egg farms generally provide egg-laying hens with a higher level of welfare than battery cage facilities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TAKOMA PARK, MARYLAND, opposes battery cage egg production, based on the inherent cruelty of confining egg-laying hens in battery cages; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT the Council encourages consumers of eggs not to purchase eggs produced by caged hens.
