Legislative File Number 2005-1537

WHEREAS, single occupancy vehicle traffic has reached an egregious level in Pittsburgh, causing excessive air pollution levels, ranking Pittsburgh 5th and 17th worst polluted metropolitan areas for annual small particle pollution and ozone pollution respectively;

WHEREAS, the safety of city residents is eroded by congested traffic on our city streets and thruways, contributing to the national traffic fatality toll of tens of thousands of lives annually;

WHEREAS, the health of city residents is compromised if current levels of automobile traffic and associated pollution is maintained,

WHEREAS, the city of Pittsburgh, recognizing the necessity of diverse transport systems, has invested itself in projects to increase the use of alternative transportation and will continue to support a public bus system, the creation of new bicycle lanes, and pedestrian-friendly streets and neighborhoods;

WHEREAS, the reduction of single occupancy vehicle traffic will decongest our city, decrease pollution and limit traffic safety hazards;

WHEREAS, there is a need to encourage Pittsburghers to explore alternative transportation in order to reap the above mentioned benefits of reducing single occupancy vehicle traffic;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby acknowledge Car Free Day and encourage the use of alternative forms of transportation and to express a commitment to a healthy and sustainable future for our city.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, declares Saturday, July 23rd, 2005 be declared Car Free Day in the City of Pittsburgh.
