RESOLUTION NO. 2008-03

WHEREAS, in 2003 through 2005, the City Council adopted an overarching goal to enhance organizational sustainability and provided funding for a consultant to conduct a sustainability assessment; and

WHEREAS, since 2005, an internal Sustainability Steering Committee has identified areas of sustainability focus for City operations, including greenhouse gas emissions and sustainable building practices, and has hired a City Sustainability Supervisor, who has begun work on a sustainability management plan that includes reducing energy use in buildings while increasing buildings' use of renewable energy; and

WHEREAS, in January 2007, local organizations and citizens established the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition to promote an ecologically, economically, and socially healthy city and county; and

WHEREAS, in January 2008, the Council provided funding to the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition to develop a community-wide sustainability initiative; and

WHEREAS, Energy Trust of Oregon has sought to identify a community in Oregon whose leaders wish to collaborate in a focused, year-long campaign to increase energy efficiency and promote use of clean, renewable power in their homes and businesses; and

WHEREAS, the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Energy Trust of Oregon on the Corvallis Energy Challenge in order to jump-start community involvement toward greater sustainability.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CORVALLIS RESOLVES to endorse the Corvallis Energy Challenge, urge Corvallis citizens to participate in the Challenge, and supports staff in exploring how City departments can work collaboratively with Energy Trust of Oregon to improve the energy efficiency of City facilities and install renewable energy systems.
