Description:

The Environmental Initiative provides a university-wide structure for monitoring programs, generating new ideas, and setting a course for Colgate’s efforts moving forward.

The initiative will draw on several of Colgate’s existing strengths in this area:

  • The Environmental Council, a group of faculty, staff, and students charged with analyzing and advocating projects to improve environmental sustainability at Colgate.
  • Faculty and administrative expertise in the area of environmental issues
  • Research partnerships between the Upstate Institute and the Picker Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Mathematics.
  • A strong interdisciplinary Environmental Studies Program
  • The Center for Ethics and World Societies’ focus on global warming and human society

The Environmental Initiative will provide leadership in this area, overseeing all of Colgate’s efforts and developing strategies to ensure that the university is not only pursuing sustainable policies but also exploring the edges of the issues.

In this way, Colgate will be a model for others, in higher education and other sectors, as they explore sustainability programs.
