The Earth's Atmosphere

Why blue?

Atmospheric gases scatter blue wavelengths of visible light more than other wavelengths, giving the Earth’s visible edge a blue halo."

At higher and higher altitudes, the atmosphere becomes so thin that it essentially ceases to exist, the life protecting blue fades to black.

“The Earth's atmosphere is an extremely thin sheet of air extending from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space... the thickness of the atmosphere is about 100 km" (62 miles)

Approximately four fifths of the atmosphere's mass is the Troposphere, which varies between 4 and 12 miles in height...
