RESOLUTION #13565
SUPPORTING A MULTILATERAL APPROACH TO THE IRAQ SITUATION THAT IS PROVIDED BY THE UNITED NATIONS

WHEREAS, the United Nations imposed, and Iraq agreed to, certain terms of surrender directly following its defeat in Kuwait, including identification and elimination of weapons of mass destruction, the use of which by Iraq was condemned by the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, United Nations Security Council Resolution 1441 recognized Iraq's non-compliance with previous Security Council resolutions and the threat that proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles pose to international peace and security; and

WHEREAS, Resolution 1441 obligates the government of Iraq to declare all aspects of its programs to develop chemical, biological and nuclear weapons and delivery systems and to identify all locations and work associated with its development and production facilities; and

WHEREAS, military conflict could result in loss of American lives; and

WHEREAS, military conflict would be extremely costly and could have a. negative impact on the economy of the United States.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Alameda does hereby encourage a genuinely multi-lateral diplomatic approach to the Iraq situation provided by the United Nations regarding the removal of weapons of mass destruction

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council fully supports our American troops and their families, and that they are in the hearts and reflections of this Council and all citizens of Alameda.
