About the Green Institute

Logo.gif

The Green Institute is a forward-looking center for research and policy based on the global values of the Green movement: nonviolence, grassroots democracy, social justice and sustainability. As the first Green policy institute in the United States whose mission statement and scope of work is explicitly based on Green values, the Green Institute will address domestic and foreign policy, the challenging 'issues of the day, decade and beyond', and offer practical, real world solutions.

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan organization and do not endorse candidates or political parties. We are an educational institution dedicated to advancing Green values and development of policies that demonstrate how these values can be applied to real world issues of governance.

While we are independent and are not formally affiliated with any Green Party, we are active in the global Green movement that has created Green Parties in over 100 countries. We have professional ties with Green parliamentarians, economists, educators, and activists in many countries. In addition, the Green Institute has relationships with and has worked with both the Böll Foundation (connected with the German Greens) and the Swedish Green Forum. Internationally, we are the American node in a network of Green institutes. Within the United States, we are uniquely positioned to fill a crucial gap in the development and influence of Green thought in both policy development and public outreach to grassroots efforts.

The Green Institute's core mission is to create and offer pragmatic solutions to critical problems. The Green philosophy is a broad and coherent program that transcends a narrow sense of politics to include attention to the quality of life, the social fabric, ecological wisdom, eco-social justice, global responsibility, nonviolence, community development, and respect for the spiritual dimension of life. Although the Green Institute is young, our projects already span diverse fields. As a think tank, our focus is on policy, analysis, and new solutions.

Through our Publications division, we will produce a broad range of analyses and other materials useful to policymakers, activists, and concerned citizens. Our intent is to reach across borders and boundaries to produce independent, informative, and investigative content that provides a Green perspective. The Green Institute is situated in the local and the global, the national and the international. Green Institute books, articles, papers, and other research will be offered through several venues, including the Internet / World Wide Web and broadcast and print media, as well as through participation in conferences and other events.
