Text:

Whereas, Congress authorized the use of military force in Iraq based on false and misleading information provided to them and to the U.S. public by the Bush administration,

Whereas, the cost of the war is projected to eventually be over one trillion dollars, which severely diminishes funds available for education, health care, disaster prevention and recovery, and other important national necessities,

Whereas, continued polls of citizens in Iraq and opinions of Middle East experts show that the continued U.S. military presence in Iraq poses a greater threat to the security of the citizens of Iraq and of the United States than having no U.S. military presence in Iraq,

Whereas, President Bush and Congress continue to fund the occupation despite a large majority of the American public expressing belief that it should be ended,

Whereas, the occupation of Iraq continues unabated and over 3700 U.S. troops and hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians have been killed and wounded,

Whereas, many national, regional, and local organizations are calling for a variety of anti-Iraq war campaigns, educational programs, and mobilization efforts this fall,

Whereas, AFT Local 4909 has passed a resolution in opposition to the occupation of Iraq,

Whereas, California Federation of Teachers, American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO, and United States Labor Against the War (which include 160 union locals nation-wide) have endorsed resolutions against the U.S. occupation of Iraq,

Therefore, be it resolved that AFT Local 4909 will endorse and promote Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 activities and events that advocate the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and the end of the occupation of Iraq by the United States.
